From statistics to sermon
The history of healthy living, in the form we have come to know, began in 1959. By then Halbert Dunn had worked in US population statistics for 30 years and had drawn conclusions, backed by facts, that became the foundation of the movement known as “wellness”. Halbert Dunn was the first to set out the basic principles of a healthy lifestyle for the general public. Within a few years, wellness and healthy living began to gain momentum, both in medical circles and among ordinary Americans. Halbert Dunn and his followers John Travis, Bill Hettler, Donald Ardell and others helped to spread the movement.
Dunn described two different states of a healthy person:
- Good health. The state in which a person is free of illness.
- High-level wellness. The author describes this state as “a condition of change in which the individual moves forward, climbing toward a higher potential of functioning”. A healthy lifestyle and proper, restorative rest help to achieve it.
In the 1970s, the idea of wellness became “contagious” among Americans. In 1975, John Travis opened the first wellness centre in the US, the Wellness Resource Center in Mill Valley, California.
Where to learn: the meccas of wellness
Wellness and spa resorts now operate all over the world. Those who can afford premium holidays and appreciate first-class service and quality choose the US and Europe. Among European destinations for wellness travel and rehabilitation, Switzerland remains the most popular.
Grand Resort Bad Ragaz is the finest wellness resort in Switzerland. In May 2017, Prime Traveller named it first in the Best Wellness Clinic category.
There are many reasons for this. One of them is the 36.5° Wellbeing & Thermal Spa, with thermal waters that have unique healing properties. Grand Resort Bad Ragaz is famous for them worldwide. In 1871, Europe’s first indoor thermal-water pool opened here; today it is called Tamina Therme.
The resort’s spa area has numerous saunas and is considered one of the best in Europe.
Grand Resort Bad Ragaz holds themed sauna evenings. Here you can immerse yourself in an unforgettable atmosphere of relaxation and leave the bustle of everyday life far behind. Different methods of air circulation, scents, music, light and special effects create a unique show each time, with relaxing treatments, beauty masks and scrubs.
The resort has 8 restaurants, serving new, refined dishes of Swiss and European cuisine every day. One of the restaurants holds a Michelin star. Gourmets have plenty to indulge in. The atmosphere invites celebration and complete relaxation.
The power of healing
The clinic at Grand Resort Bad Ragaz deserves particular attention. Grand Resort Bad Ragaz has been rehabilitating patients for many years. Patient care here uses therapeutic, healing thermal water from the nearby Tamina Gorge. The thermal waters have an excellent effect on health and are invaluable in rehabilitation. Thanks to their physical properties, they benefit the heart, lungs, circulatory system, kidneys, musculoskeletal system and hormonal balance.
The thermal waters:
- reduce tension in the vessel walls by 30%
- increase blood flow by 30%
- improve lung ventilation
- lower blood pressure
- improve heart function by 25%
Grand Resort Bad Ragaz has offered outpatient diagnostics, prevention, therapy and rehabilitation since 1957.
The clinic is a landmark in rehabilitation treatment in Switzerland: at the renovated, modern clinic in Bad Ragaz, patients enjoy a unique combination of first-class inpatient rehabilitation and exclusive five-star care.
