From statistics to preaching

The history of healthy living, in the packaging we are used to, began in 1959. By that time, Holbert Dunn had already worked in demographic statistics in the United States for 30 years and had drawn conclusions for himself, supported by facts, which became the basis for the movement called "wellness". Halbert Dunn was the first to articulate the basic principles of wellness to the public. Within a few years, wellness and HWL began to gain momentum, both in medical circles and among American everyday people. Halbeth Dunn and his followers John Travis, Gerhart Hettler, Donald Ardell, and others helped spread the movement.

Dunn described two different states of a healthy person:

  • Good health. A state where a person is not sick with anything.
  • High Level Wellness. The author describes this state as "a condition for change in which the person moves forward, rising toHigh Level Wellness. a higher potential of functioning." It is achieved through a healthy lifestyle and proper adequate rest.

In the 70s, the idea of wellness became "contagious" among Americans. In 1995, John Travis opened the first wellness center in the United States called Mill Valley.
