The human immune system is a complex of organs, tissues and cells responsible for protecting the body. It detects external and internal threats, including bacteria and viruses, and fights them, while recognising the body’s own cells.

Everyone has both innate and acquired immunity. Innate immunity attacks everything at once. It is the reason we experience all those symptoms of acute respiratory infections that make us so miserable.

Acquired immunity is more complex. It is directed at specific bacteria and viruses the body has already encountered, and it fights them more effectively than innate immunity does. On first contact, immune cells “sharpen” themselves against the new enemy and react faster the next time they meet it.

Signs of a weakened immune system

The state of the immune system reflects a person’s activity, daily routine and behaviour. The body is affected by stress, unhealthy food and bad habits, medication and a sedentary lifestyle. In response to such factors, immunity declines and can no longer fully protect the body.

Strengthening immunity is one of the main tasks for anyone who cares about their health. Before you begin, however, you need to understand which factors weaken the body’s natural defences.

The following signs indicate a weakened immune system:

  • Acute respiratory viral infections last longer, take a severe course and lead to complications;
  • Superficial wounds, scratches and grazes heal poorly;
  • Viral infections and colds become more frequent, up to 3–4 or more times a year;
  • Weakness, pain, swelling, pale or dry skin appear, and the body loses its ability to withstand even the simplest external influences;
  • You experience drowsiness, fainting during the day, headaches, dizziness and nervousness;

These signs point to a partial or severe weakening of immunity.

There are many ways to improve the functioning of the immune system and thus protect yourself against many illnesses and adverse conditions:

  • Visiting public baths and saunas. This suits people with no contraindications to high temperatures. Bathing helps eliminate toxins, improves the synthesis of immunoglobulins and fights external infections.
  • Cold hardening is an excellent way to improve health dramatically. It can be practised all year round, but the first stage should be gradual, taking into account the body’s particular features and any existing conditions.
  • Pharmacy products, popular preparations and dietary supplements should be taken strictly as directed by specialists, who set the duration, dosage and dietary regimen.
  • The body needs nutrients and oxygen, and physical activity helps move nutrients through the blood vessels and remove toxins.
  • Make it a rule to walk in the fresh air for half an hour a day. Evening walks have a positive effect on sleep.
  • Exercise also strengthens and hardens the body. Remember, however, to keep stress levels under control, as otherwise exercise can do harm.

The body’s great secret is that it is a complete system. It therefore needs care and a healthy lifestyle. A balanced diet, vitamins, physical activity and regular sleep all strengthen immunity.
