University Hospital Zurich

About the hospital

World-class university medicine in the heart of Zurich

A hospital has stood on this site since 1204; it took its current name, Universitätsspital Zürich, in 1978. Today it is one of Switzerland’s largest and most distinguished hospitals: in the Newsweek World’s Best Hospitals 2026 ranking it holds 1st place in Switzerland and 9th place worldwide. The hospital is open to all patients every day and offers the full spectrum of care — from primary care to highly specialised university medicine.

The hospital brings together more than 40 departments and institutes, which regularly rank near the top of international league tables — as does the hospital as a whole. Each year it treats around 42,000 inpatients and records more than 600,000 outpatient visits; with approximately 900 beds, it provides around 300,000 inpatient days a year. The hospital works closely with the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Zurich and maintains numerous partnerships with ETH Zürich. It is one of Switzerland’s leading centres of medical research, with around 2,500 staff engaged in research, and some therapies are available here alone among Swiss hospitals.

For patients from abroad, the hospital’s International Office has locations on the main campus, at Zurich Airport and in the Nord 2A clinic. It coordinates interpreters, organises visits and identifies the right specialists. The specialties most sought after by international patients include the University Heart Centre, the Comprehensive Cancer Center Zürich, radiation oncology, gynaecology, dermatology and urology.
