Preserving the joint rather than replacing it
Worn cartilage was long regarded as an irreversible loss, and an artificial joint as the only solution. For more than twenty years, Professor Christoph Erggelet has pursued the opposite goal. He grows and transplants the patient's own cartilage cells, postponing joint replacement or removing the need for it. Before moving to Zurich in 2004, he held key positions at University Hospital Freiburg, and he remains Professor of Orthopaedics at the University of Freiburg.
