Radiology unites two fields. Diagnostic radiology uses X-rays to obtain images of internal structures, while nuclear medicine uses radiopharmaceuticals in very small doses that show an organ’s function, not only its form.
The repertoire covers MRI, CT, digital subtraction angiography for aneurysms, stenoses and thromboses, digital fluoroscopy, scintigraphy, PET scanning, mammography and sonography. The method is matched to the task, combining several when needed.
The laboratory side — histopathology, biochemistry, genetics, microbiology and virology — works in direct contact with radiologists and treating physicians. Modern detectors and image-processing algorithms make it possible to reduce radiation dose, which matters especially with frequent examinations, in children and in pregnancy.
